Hammers From The Past

Andy Frost

I was just browsing on the web and thought I'd pay the Woodley Hammers site a visit to see what's going on and noticed in the "Hammers from the past section" that Colin Scott has included an update along with a photo which although not very clear (or flattering !) is great to see and brought back some happy memories.

I too, played in the very first Hammers team (I'm in the photo Colin provided, back row second from the right) and remember very clearly that first season which I think we played in the Bracknell U12 League.

As part of the original Hammers team I played at centre back and then a couple of years later, reverted to right back where I stayed until I left the Hammers when reaching the age of 16 having played for the U17 team.

There were many highlights playing for the Hammers in those unique "purple" shirts, none more so than winning a Cup Final against arch rivals Woodley Wanderers at Newbury Town's ground. I also remember winning another Cup Final played at Bracknell Town's ground and being presented medals by the Queens Park Rangers and England goalkeeper of the day by the name of Phil Parkes. (younger Hammers will no doubt never have heard of him !)

Nowadays, being the wrong side of 40, I am too old to play 11 a side football, but still play 5-a-side football on a weekly basis.

Good to see that Woodley Hammers are still thriving and doing well and congratulations on a great web site !
